Hot & Cold

hotandcold

We conducted a piece of research to prove that we can all tell the difference between the sound of hot, and the sound of cold.

We recorded pouring different temperature liquids, from a set height and set pace, into various receptacles and asked people to guess which was hot, and which was cold. 96% of participants got it correct.

For a second experiment we took recordings of water being poured
at room temperature, and using analysis of the previous recordings, designed them to sound either hot or cold.

Understanding the frequencies that make sounds hot or cold enables us to design these characteristics to background soundscapes, music, advertising, online UI audio, even products and packaging; making them appear perceptively hotter or colder.

Listen to these sounds and see if you can tell which is which
